In 1999, the Nursing Unit was established and operated under the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences from 1999 to 2002. Subsequently, it was placed under the Community Health Department from 2002 until 2008. Later, it was moved to the Medical Department until 2015. The Nursing Unit was raised status to Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation on 1 August 2015. In October 2020, the Department of Nursing and Rehabilitation was separated into Department of Nursing and Department of Rehabilitation. 

The Department of Nursing conduct teaching and research in the field of Nursing. The department teaching activities covers all aspects of providing holistic nursing care to patients in the hospital as well as providing community health care and public health. The department also works with the Ministry of Health Malaysia and private agencies to provide clinical training to nursing students. In addition, the Department focuses on activities such as student mobility programs and research collaborations.

One of the university's vision and mission is to achieve excellence in research and to strengthen the status of UPM as a research university. Hence, the Department of Nursing emphasizes on research activities and postgraduate study. Our aspiration is to foster collaborative and dynamic research culture, with a focus on producing high-quality research.
