Lam Jia Yong, PhD student from the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, was crowned the winner of the "Materials Lecture Competition 2019"

Lam Jia Yong, a 27-year-old PhD student from the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was crowned the winner of the 2019 Materials Lecture Competition Final held in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) on 30th April 2019, defeating the other 4 finalists from other universities.

Materials Lecture Competition (MLC) is a yearly national event mainly organized by Institute of Materials Malaysia (IMM) and Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) UK. This national-wide competition is an initiative intended to enhance awareness among young Material Scientists and Engineers in Malaysia on the importance of Materials Engineering and sustainability in the advancement of technology and humankind.

The winning MLC 2019 Final presentation is entitled “DNA biosensor based on optical fiber for the detection of pathogen: A novel approach” which summarized his work on the development of biosensor to improve the current diagnostics for leptospirosis, a disease of global importance. Jia Yong's thesis advisory committee members include Associate Professor Chee Hui Yee as main supervisor, and Dr. Mohd Hanif Yaacob and Associate Professor Dr. Ho Kok Lian as co-supervisors. He is thankful to his supervisors for their continuous moral support and guidance in his research.

Prior to becoming the national champion, Jia Yong first started his MLC journey in the UPM level, which was held on 14th March 2019 in Institute of Tropical Forestry and Forest Products (INTROP), where he triumphed over 15 other contestants from various faculties. Following his win in the UPM level, he was then selected to compete in the national semi-final which was held on 4th April 2019 in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) , where he was selected as one of the five finalists to compete in the final out of the 20 contestants from various public and private universities in Malaysia. 

In the national stage, he was trained by his coaching team comprising of Dr. Norkhairunnisa Mazlan, Dr. Ahmad Salahuddin Mohd Harithuddin, Dr. Mohd Salahuddin Mohd Basri, Dr. Ainun Zuriyati Mohamed and Dr. Yasmin Mustapha Kamil. He is grateful to his coaches for allocating their time to provide inputs and feedbacks to improve his presentation and motivating him to perform at his best in the competition.

He was awarded RM3,000 in cash along with a plaque and certificate. As the winner, he will be fully sponsored by IOM3 UK to represent Malaysia and compete at the Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition 2019 (YPWLC 2019) which is to be held in London, United Kingdom in October 2019.
