The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine was officially upgraded from the Unit of Rehabilitation Medicine and Rehabilitation division in October 2020. Previously, the Rehabilitation Unit operated under the Medical Department in 2008 to 2015. Later, the Rehabilitation Unit merged with the Nursing Unit under the Nursing and Rehabilitation Department. At the same time, there is also a Unit of Rehabilitation Medical under the Department of Medicine.

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine was established to conduct teaching, research and specialist services in the field of rehabilitation to professionals, the general public, industry and also higher learning institutions in Malaysia. Rehabilitation is a field of health science that uses equipment, robotics and activities as a medium of treatment to help an individual to improve physical, cognitive, social and psychological functions without the use of medication. The core services in the field of rehabilitation are Rehabilitation Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy. However, there are also allied services such as Rehabilitation Nurses, Rehabilitation Psychologists, Social Workers, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Podiatrics, Sports Rehabilitation and General Rehabilitation Practitioners.
