The Department of Psychiatry at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) was established in 2006, when it was separated from the Department of Medicine due to the significant differences in the two disciplines. During the separation, the unit which was previously known as the Unit of Psychiatry, thereafter changed to the Department of Psychiatry, and functioned as a department on its own. Since its inception, Department of Psychiatry has developed into one of the most innovative and productive academic departments in the country.

Our department is devoted to the tripartite mission of teaching, research, and clinical service. Firstly, we have a long-standing commitment to ensuring that the primary care physicians and mental health practitioners we educate are well-versed in humane aspects of patient care. In 2012, master of psychiatry was introduced. This program aims to produce competitive mental health specialists who have high ethical values and critical thinking skills needed to make informed decision in the area of mental health.

Secondly, in addition to medical education, our scientists and researchers are dedicated to finding out more about mental health problems and to develop prevention and intervention programs that can improve quality of life. The research prowess of the department and academic staff is reflected in its recent rating by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences as one of the best clinical departments along with Associate Professor Dr. Hamidin Awang and Associate Professor Dr. Normala Ibrahim as the best clinical researchers for 2012. At the national level, the L'Oréal Malaysia for Women in Science was awarded to Professor Dr. Firdaus Mukhtar in 2012 for her outstanding contribution to scientific progress.

Last but not least, the Department of Psychiatry has expertise in areas relevant to human lifespan, ranging from child psychiatry to adolescent psychiatry to geriatric psychiatry. To this end, our department offers a continuum of mental health services for both outpatients and inpatients of various ages and diagnoses. The major sites for clinical services are Hospital Pengajar Universiti Putra Malaysia (HPUPM).
