Master of Clinical Psychology

OVERVIEW

Master of Clinical Psychology is a programme that seeks to train those interested in clinical and practical skills that prepares them to be a competent clinical psychologist. A clinical psychologist is involved in assessing, diagnosing, and planning preventive and interventive interventions for a variety of psychological disorders that disrupts the population's daily and social functioning.

This full-time coursework-based program covers basic and advanced theories of clinical psychology, clinical intervention skills, psychotherapy skills, assessment and diagnostic tests, adult and child psychopathology, neuropsychology, research methodology and statistics. In addition, student will be required to carry out research projects in the field of clinical psychology and undergo clinical placements at the Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah and other clinics or centres that provide mental health services.

 

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the program are:

  1. To produce clinical psychologists who have integrity to serve the community.
  2. To produce clinical psychologists who are highly skilled in mental health consultation from various disciplines.
  3. To produce clinical psychologists who can assess psychological theory and knowledge at an advanced level in the planning of an optimal treatment plan.

 

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Master of Clinical Psychology is a programme structured in four semesters over two years and is taught in English. The curriculum includes course work, practicum/internship, and research project. Students must complete a minimum of 48 credits for graduation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  1. Admission requirements are as determined by the School of Graduate Studies, UPM. Bachelor’s degree in psychology or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.75*; OR Note: A bachelor’s degree in psychology that is recognized but does not achieve a GPA of 2.75 out of 4.00 (but not less than 2.50) may be accepted subject to a detailed internal assessment by an independent assessment panel.
  2. Other bachelor’s degrees with a minimum GPA of 2.75*, AND a minimum prerequisite of 45 credits of a Psychology module or its equivalent** with a minimum GPA of 2.75* in the prerequisite module; OR
  3. Other bachelor’s degrees with a minimum CGPA of 2.75*, AND a prerequisite of a minimum of 30 credits of a Psychology module or its equivalent**, with a minimum of CGPA of 2.75 in the prerequisite module, AND a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Subject Test (Psychology) with minimum score of 550; OR
  4. Pass the interview conducted by the faculty; AND
  5. Overseas applicants need to achieve a TOEFL score of 550 or Band 6.0 for IELTS. Note: *CGPA 2.75 out of 4.00, **Covering all eight areas of knowledge (scientific inquiry, biological basis in behaviour, human development, cognitive-affective basis in behaviour, individual differences, socio-cultural context in behaviour, values in psychology and the application of psychological science) stated in pages 14 – 15 of the Psychology Program Standard.
