Department of Medical Education (DME)
The Department of Medical Education (DME) was formerly known as the Medical Education Research & Innovation Unit (MERIU), which operated under the Office of the Deputy Dean (Academic – Medicine), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The unit was established to support the advancement of research, innovation, and best practices in medical education. The Department of Medical Education is currently headed by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saiful Bahri Yusoff.
In line with the faculty’s commitment to strengthening academic governance and organisational restructuring, the unit was officially upgraded and established as the Department of Medical Education in 2026. This development reflects the faculty’s dedication to enhancing curriculum development, teaching and learning, assessment practices, and quality assurance in medical education programmes.
The department plays a pivotal role in coordinating and improving curricula, particularly the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme and other academic programmes, while enhancing assessment systems and leading faculty development initiatives. DME also serves as a reference centre for medical education research, teaching innovations, and evidence-based academic practices.
In addition to supporting accreditation processes and compliance with national and international standards, the department actively organises workshops, academic training programmes, research activities, and strategic collaborations to ensure excellence and continuous improvement in medical education.
The Department of Medical Education provides professional services in the following areas:
