Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences with Honors

OVERVIEW

This program is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), United Kingdom. It combines the study of pre-clinical and para-clinical sciences. The program structure includes subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biotechnology, molecular biology, cytogenetics, pharmacology, toxicology, microbiology, and other sub-disciplines of biomedical science.

The program emphasizes the application of advanced biomedical technologies in human-related studies through courses such as laboratory diagnosis of diseases, and safety and quality control of food and pharmaceutical products.

In addition to equipping students with the ability to conduct research in the field of biomedical science, the program also aims to produce graduates who are well-trained and skilled in current research, laboratory diagnostic techniques, and laboratory management in both hospital and industrial settings.

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEO)

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science with Honours programme aims to produce professionals who:

i) possess knowledge and skills in the field of biomedical science.

ii) are competent in conducting research in biomedical science.

iii) practice lifelong learning and are able to contribute to the advancement of the biomedical science field.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science with Honours programme comprises a total of 140 credit hours, including 2 credit hours of co-curricular courses. The courses offered in this programme are divided into three (3) main components: University Courses, Core Courses, and Elective Courses.

University Courses (21 credits)
A total of 21 credits, including eight (8) courses and two (2) credit hours of co-curricular courses, must be taken by students. The University Courses component includes humanities-based courses that cover soft skills and social awareness, aiming to develop communication skills, entrepreneurship, and patriotism among students.

Core Courses (110 credits)
A total of 110 credit hours of core courses are required to ensure that students attain adequate competency in the field of biomedical science. The Core Courses include:

  • Basic Courses
These courses (20 credits) provide the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary in biomedical science.

  • Professional Courses
These courses (72 credits) offer more in-depth and specialized knowledge in specific areas of biomedical science.

  • Industrial Training
Industrial training (18 credits) is divided into SBP4904 Biomedical Practicum I (4 credits) and SBP4906 Biomedical Practicum II (14 credits). This component provides students with sufficient job exposure and hands-on training in biomedical science settings.

Elective Courses (9 credits)
Students are required to select 9 credit hours from a range of elective courses offered by the Department of Biomedical Science, according to their individual interests.
