Forewords from the Deputy Dean (Academic of Medicine)

I’m delighted to welcome you to our webpage.

FMHS UPM offers medical programs for both undergraduate (Medical Doctor/MD Program) and post-graduate medical students (Master of Medicine/MMed Program). The MD Program is a 5-year program. It is composed of pre-clinical year (2 years) and clinical year (3 years). While the MMed Program is a 4-year program.

Education is a fundamental bridge between excellent, integrity and accountability. Practicing medicine is about dealing with people and understanding the world we live in. Hence we are committed to nurture our students obtaining knowledge and skills with a healthy perspective and a measure of humility appropriate to lifelong learners.

Since the establishment of the programs, the medical curriculum has been evolving over the years. Our curricula have encompassed holistic approach, where we integrate knowledge, physician and patient communication, medical humanities and professional formation. We reshape and built upon the best of what we had while adding emerging areas and enhancing interdisciplinary programs by the strength of other faculties in UPM like veterinary, technology and education. To learn while sharing, to share while learning’.

Teaching and learning landscape has changed over years. The Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) has given a new impetus to educational transformation. As we value our students as future medical leaders, it is vitally important to impart appropriate education to the future workforce. Thus profound changes have been prepared in major aspects of medical education i.e. content, pedagogy and structure. Among others cognitive flexibility to deal with complexity and self-learning skills to remain relevant in the era of rapid changes have been incorporated in the curricula.

We use Bloom’s model (Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor) in our approach whilst emphasizing higher level cognitive domain i.e. Application, Analysis and Evaluating. We impart deep learning to our students by encompassing blended, project- and scenario-based and practice-oriented learning. Learning by doing are used as a tool to train graduates. These are achieved through practical in labs and clinical skill labs as well as bed side teaching.

Our curriculum is also aim to produce graduates with the ability to think critically. Soft skill are highlighted among the students to increase awareness, enhance communication and patient care throughout the program. We believe lifelong learning is a permanent part of professional life.

Ultimately, through mentoring, coaching, networking and action learning we aim to nurture knowledgeable and compassion medical doctors and specialists with high integrity and respect to improve life for all.
