ASEAN Dengue Day 2024

 ASEAN Dengue Day 2024

This year’s ASEAN Dengue Day theme, “Together Against Dengue: Building a Resilient ASEAN Community,” highlights the importance of everyone working together to fight this serious disease. Dengue fever is a big health threat that needs action from all of us. By joining forces and taking action, we can greatly reduce dengue cases and keep our communities healthy. As of 1st June 2024, there have been 64,629 dengue cases and 48 deaths in Malaysia. This is a 32.6% increase in cases compared to the same period last year. There are over 72 areas with dengue hotspot areas, and 64% of these are in Selangor. This increase shows how important it is to step up our efforts to prevent and control dengue.

To fight dengue effectively, we need to take simple, practical steps. First, eliminate places where mosquitoes breed. Check and empty any containers holding water, like flower pots, buckets, and plant trays. Cover all water containers to stop mosquitoes from breeding. Clean and cover water tanks and throw away or recycle old tires, bottles, and other items that collect water. Change the water in flower vases, pet bowls, and bird baths at least once a week.

Second, use mosquito repellents and barriers to prevent bites. Apply repellent to exposed skin and clothing, following the label instructions. Install screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out, and use mosquito nets when sleeping, especially in areas with many mosquitoes.

Protect yourself by wearing long sleeves and pants, especially during early morning and evening when mosquitoes are most active. Use mosquito traps, coils, and electric repellents to reduce mosquito numbers around your home. Join community efforts, like clean-up days, to remove mosquito breeding sites in your neighbourhood. Report potential breeding sites to local authorities or leaders so they can take action.

Lastly, stay informed with the latest information and advice from health authorities on dengue prevention and outbreaks. Share this information with your family, friends, and neighbours to raise awareness and encourage everyone to take precautions. By working together and taking these simple steps, we can greatly reduce and eventually stop dengue in our communities. Let’s unite to protect our health and create safer, healthier places for everyone.
