International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2024
“Celebrating the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking: A Call for Compassion and Evidence-Based Approaches”
The global drug problem is a complex issue that affects millions of people worldwide. Many individuals who use drugs face stigma and discrimination, which can further harm their physical and mental health and prevent them from accessing the help they need. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recognizes the importance of taking a people-centered approach to drug policies, focusing on human rights, compassion, and evidence-based practices.
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is marked on June 26 each year to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse. This year's campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy, providing evidence-based and voluntary services for all, offering alternatives to punishment, prioritizing prevention, and leading with compassion. The campaign also seeks to combat stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental.
The global drug problem is multifaceted, affecting individuals, communities, and societies worldwide. From those struggling with substance use disorders to those grappling with the consequences of drug trafficking and organized crime, the impact of drugs is far-reaching and complex. Addressing this challenge requires a scientific, evidence-based approach that prioritizes prevention and treatment.
This year's World Drug Day campaign recognizes that effective drug policies must be rooted in science, research, full respect for human rights, compassion, and a deep understanding of the social, economic, and health implications of drug use. Together, we must amplify our efforts to combat the global drug problem, guided by these principles.
Through collective action and a commitment to evidence-based solutions, we can create a world where individuals are empowered to lead healthy, fulfilling lives, free from the harms of drug abuse.
