GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES OF ANATOMY – BRINGING TOGETHER THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY
World Anatomy Day, celebrated annually on 15 October, commemorates the death of Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564), often regarded as the founder of modern human anatomy. This day honours his legacy and recognises anatomy as the foundation of medical education and research worldwide.
The 2025 theme, “Global Perspectives of Anatomy – Bringing Together the Global Community and Recognising Differences While Celebrating Similarities,” highlights unity, diversity, and collaboration among anatomists around the world. It calls for sharing knowledge, promoting inclusivity, and celebrating the global anatomical community that continues to advance science and education.
In Malaysia, anatomy remains a cornerstone of medical training. Universities such as UM, UKM, UPM, USM, and UiTM play a vital role in nurturing anatomical knowledge through dissection halls, anatomy museums, and body donation programmes.
Cadaver preservation in anatomy museums goes beyond technical processes, it embodies ethical, cultural, and humanistic values. Modern preservation techniques such as plastination and initiatives like the Silent Mentor Programme uphold both scientific excellence and respect for human donors.
World Anatomy Day is a reminder that anatomy connects us all, through the study of the human body, we discover not only our biological structures but also our shared humanity.
From head to toe, from heart to brain, anatomy connects us again and again. Every muscle, nerve, and bone tells its own story and through dissection, we uncover the secrets hidden beneath the surface. So, let’s keep exploring, discovering, and maybe even laughing a little as we learn, because understanding the human body isn’t just about science; it’s about celebrating life’s greatest mystery!
