Undergraduate Program
The Department of Biomedical Science is involved in the coordination and management of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science with Honors program, which is conducted over four years. The total credit hours for courses in the existing curriculum is 136 credits, whereas in the new curriculum, the total credit hours have increased to 140 credits. The new curriculum has been offered to all new students starting from the 2024/2025 academic session. Students who are following the old curriculum will continue with it until they complete their studies.
For undergraduate students following the new curriculum, all students must take and pass Compulsory Courses (21 credits), Core Courses (110 credits), and Elective Courses (9 credits). The courses offered in the modules cover fields such as Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Hematology, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Immunology, Pathology, Genetics, Radiobiology, Bioinformatics, and Transfusion Science. Other courses such as Psychology, Critical Thinking Skills, Advanced Malay Language, National Studies, Agriculture and Human Science, Basic Entrepreneurship, Ethnic Relations, and English Language Skills are also mandatory for students to strengthen their foundational knowledge, so that students are better prepared to contribute to a healthy society in line with the country’s development and progress.
Postgraduate Program
Department of Biomedical Science offers two research degrees:
- PhD (by research)
- MSc (by research)
For the field of study, please refer to the faculty’s website (Current field of studies – which are mainly toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, genetics, physiology, molecular medicine, molecular biology, microbiology, immunobiology).
To date, there are no taught postgraduate courses offered within the department.
Career Path
- Graduates may find employment in research laboratories, veterinary science or hospital laboratories.
- Biomedical Sciences graduates may pursue a career in education. They can be educators in the universities and schools.
- Students can also undertake postgraduates’ courses in any related field and become researchers and lecturers.
- Biomedical Science graduates can also enter the police force in the area of forensic.
- Industries may employ Biomedical Sciences graduates for research and development of industrial laboratory instrumentation and also in food and health care area.
- Insurance companies largely employed Biomedical Science undergraduates as underwriters and claims executives.
