The Department of Biomedical Sciences was established in 1993/1994 under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production. This department became affiliated with the Department of Medical Science and Department of Nutrition and Community Health to establish the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences on 1st August 1996.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences and lecturer rooms are located on the ground floor of Block C and D while laboratories for research and teaching are located in Block A, B and D.

This department consists of six units:

1. Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Unit.
2. Cell Biology Unit.
3. Physiology Unit.
4. Pharmacology and Toxicology Unit.
5. Biochemistry Unit.
6. Medical Genetic Units.

The units are headed by Heads of Units who oversees teaching and research in their respective units. All lecturers in each unit are PhD qualified and trained in their fields. In the early years of the department, the first Head of Department was Associate Professor Dr. Kassim Hamid before being succeeded by Associate Professor Dr. Patimah Ismail, Professor S. Balabaskaran, Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Roslan Sulaiman, Professor. Dr. Abdul Manan Mat Jais, Associate Professor Dr. Sabrina Sukardi, Associate Professor Dr. Latifah Saiful Yazan, Professor Dr. Muhammad Nazrul Hakim Abdullah, Associate Professor Dr. Thilakavathy Karruppiah and Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Nasir Mohd Desa, Prof. Ts. Dr. Cheah Yoke Kqueen and Prof. Dr. Daud Ahmad Israf Ali. The Department is now headed by Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Nasir Mohd Desa and the Department is fully operational at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM campus adjacent to Serdang Hospital.
