Dietitians work with other multi-disciplinary professionals to provide patient-centered and evidence-based nutrition care.
The department offers the following services:
1. In-patient food service
The foodservice for patients in the ward is managed by a private contractor but strictly regulated by the department to meet the food safety, quality and dietary requirements. Dietitians in the department carry out regular audits to ensure the service provided is high quality.

If you have any issues, comments or questions regarding meals served during your stay in the ward, please call (03) 9769 9108.
The time of meal is served as follows:
Breakfast: 7.30 - 8.00 am
Lunch : 12.00 - 12:30 pm
Evening snacks : 3.00 - 3.30pm
Dinner: 6.30 - 7.00pm

2. Food provision for health care workers

The Department of Dietetics also provides meals to qualified health care workers who are involved in “OT” based on the existing circular references (MOH Financial Division Circular No. 1, 2009 and Circular No. 39 MOH-58/054/4). The choice of meal provided for this service is in the category of 'normal diet' only.

3. Clinical dietetic services for patients in ward

The aspiration of the Dietetic Department is to offer clinical dietetic services to patients in the ward using auto-referral basis through the placement of 1 dietitian per ward once HSAAS has been operating at its maximum capacity. This means that all patients entering the ward will be screened in terms of nutritional needs and malnutrition risk and further evaluation on nutritional status and nutritional intervention will be conducted on patients in need. These steps that include nutrition screening, nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention and nutrition monitoring and evaluation is known as the 'Nutrition Care Process'.
However, as for now, the department is still in the early phase of operation, thus, the clinical dietetics services for patients in the ward can only be provided by referral from a doctor.

Some of the dietary interventions that are commonly provided to patients in the ward include:
- Prescription of diet based on medical needs and disease
- Diet consultation based on medical diagnosis
- Prescription of food supplements / enteral products either orally or through tubes for patients who cannot meet the nutritional requirements.
- Preparation and delivery of therapeutic diet are based on patient needs. Some examples of therapeutic diets are as follow:
- Diet with modified macronutrient composition - such as high protein diet, low carb diet (diabetic diet), low fat diet, high calorie diet etc.
- Diet with controled micronutrient- such as low sodium diet, low potassium diet etc.
- Diet with modified food texture - such as soft diet, blenderized diet, etc.

4. Dietary consultation for outpatient
The department offers dietary counseling to patients who required medical nutrition therapy, which is conducted individually or in groups. Patients with chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney failure require medical nutrition therapy to optimize the control of the disease along with medical treatment and medication provided.
In addition, diet counseling is also offered to individuals in need of weight control, pregnant women and children with failure to thrive.
We receive internal referrals from Family Medicine Clinic and other specialist clinics at HSAAS. We also accept patients on a 'walk-in' basis, however, patients are advised to make an appointment in advance to make sure for available slot.
