BACKGROUND
The Surgery Department at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has been a pivotal part of the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at UPM since its inception in 1998. Since then, the Surgery Department has become one of the cornerstones of the development of this faculty. As time has progressed, this department has contributed various expert and professional services to the community.
From its establishment, the UPM Surgery Department has forged a close collaboration with the Surgery Department at Kuala Lumpur Hospital. This collaboration aimed to provide teaching and learning opportunities to UPM medical students while also offering specialized services in clinical work at Kuala Lumpur Hospital. Within this context, various types of surgeries, including general surgery and bariatric surgery, have been successfully performed with excellence.
The department later moved to Hospital Serdang, which subsequently became Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah (HSAAS), UPM. Here, the Surgery Department continued its clinical duties and teaching medical students. With the development of HSAAS, the department expanded its services, providing better patient care and advanced teaching through technological advancements and facilities available at the hospital.
In addition to its focus on clinical services, the Surgery Department also played a crucial role in producing doctoral graduates for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at UPM. In line with this initiative, the department placed a deep emphasis on research in the field of surgery and has generated various high-impact studies and prestigious scientific publications.
Among the clinical services offered at HSAAS are:
In December 2022, the Surgery Department took a significant step forward by establishing the Master of Surgery program (General Surgery). Dr. Hizami Amin Tai was appointed as the first coordinator of this program. This is an important initiative aimed at producing a greater number of high-quality general surgeons in Malaysia. Recently, Dr. Hizami Amin Tai was given the responsibility as the head of Department Surgery starting October 2023.
The history of the UPM Surgery Department is a story of excellence, dedication, and service to the community. We are grateful to all individuals who have supported and been a part of this remarkable journey, and we are committed to continuing our efforts to contribute to a better world of medicine and health education.
