Paediatric Department was initially established as a unit under the Department of Human Growth and Development in 1998 which consisted of three units i.e. Paediatric Unit, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit and Clinical Genetics Unit. In 2006, this was dissolved. Following that the Paediatric and Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department were established. This new Paediatric Department was relocated to the new complex of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (FMHS UPM) Serdang adjacent to Serdang Hospital in August 2006. Currently, the Paediatric Department has one unit which is the Clinical Immunology Unit.

For medical doctor undergraduate program, clinical teaching in paediatrics is carried out in year 4 and 5. The students are not only exposed to the theory, but the importance of clinical aspects in diagnosing and treating acute and chronic diseases are also emphasised.

In 2012 the Paediatric Department started to offer post-graduate program namely Master of Medicine (Paediatrics). This program offers full-time course work that aligns with high national standards to produce highly qualified graduates as general paediatrician. Apart from teaching activities mentioned above, the excellence in research and professional consultation is also taken part.

MISSION

The mission of Paediatric department is to become a centre of excellence via effective and skilful teaching, research, professional services and consultancy in paediatrics particularly and in medicine and health sciences generally.

OBJECTIVES

1. To produce competitive and qualified graduates

2. To provide trained health care providers

3. To expand activities in paediatric research
