Water Sustainability Index analysis showed a decrease of 31% in 2002 indicating water resources are rapidly depleting and managed unsustainably in Malaysia. With annual average rainfall of 3000 mm, rainwater harvesting is seen as an alternative water resource to meet high water demands in Malaysia. This project which was one of the community projects under Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. 

The project was aimed to construct a rainwater harvesting system in Sekolah Kebangsaan Chabau and Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Temu (Melaka, Malaysia). Official launching ceremony of rain water harvesting project at Sekolah Kebangsaan Chabau (Melaka) and was officiated by Professor Dr. Shamsul Bahri Hj. Md Tamrin on May 4, 2018. While in Sekolah Kebangsaan Padang Temu, the project was launched by Associate Professor Dr. Juliana on July 6, 2018. 

The rainwater harvesting system was designed to be simple and uncomplicated with minimum maintenance requirement and at a very minimal cost. A total of 80.2% of treated water usage reduction has been observed in primary school of Chabau. While in primary school of Padang Temu, water reduction was observed between 6.4 – 59.1%.

The stored rainwater has been utilized for cleaning and gardening activities in these schools. This project is a continuous efforts to empower sustainable water demand management in Malaysia which starts by involving young children from school and home
