Master of Surgery (General Surgery)

INTRODUCTION

Master of Surgery (General Surgery) is one of the specialist programs offered at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM. General surgery specialists are very much needed in government hospitals, IPTA as well as the private sector in line with the efforts of the Ministry of Health Malaysia to address the problem of the lack of specialists in the field of surgical subspecialties to the community. Therefore, the faculty held this program aimed at producing more general surgeons to meet the high demand of the public and private sector for professional human resources with expertise in the field of surgical subspecialties. In addition, the number of instructors for this program will increase and will meet the needs of national experts from time to time. This program also aims to increase the number of general surgery specialists currently who are able to conduct relevant research related to health problems related to the field offered.

This program aims to produce competent surgeons, comply with the principles of medical ethics, able to manage and complete general surgery cases in addition to conducting research and development in the field of general surgery.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

The Master of Surgery (General Surgery) program is a full-time training program, "in-service clinical training" (clinical training in service) for four (4) years. The organizational structure of this program aims to produce candidates who are not only competent in performing the tasks of a general surgeon but are able to follow subspecialty training according to their interests.

 

Phase I: Year 1

  • Trainees will undergo a 48-week general surgery clinical placement in year 1. During this period trainees must acquire adequate knowledge in basic medical science as a basis for clinical surgery and principles of surgical practice. Trainees need to apply this knowledge in the daily management of general surgery patients. Clinical rotations include General Surgery, Intensive Care and Emergency care.
 

Phase II : Year 2 and Year 3

  • Trainees will broaden their perspective in surgical practice where trainees will be exposed to several surgical subspecialties i.e Pediatric Surgery/ Urology/ Neurosurgery/ Plastic Surgery/ Cardiothoracic

 

Year 3

  • Trainees will broaden their perspectives in surgical practice where trainees will be exposed to several surgical subspecialties such as Upper Gastrointestinal/Hepatobiliary/
  • Colorectal/Vascular/Breast and Endocrine. 

 

Phase III: Year 4

  • Trainees will continue general surgery training and function as 'Senior Registrars'. Trainees will manage general surgery cases individually under the supervision of supervisors.
  • Throughout the program, trainees are expected to undertake coursework in addition to their clinical commitments. Coursework includes clinical case writing, journal reviews, participation in workshops, conducting research and producing a research dissertation. They are expected to maintain a logbook documenting all cases throughout the program and procedures carried out.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL CONDITIONS: 

  1. According to university and graduate study center admission requirements.
  2. Succeeded in the Admission Assessment for the Master of Surgery Program conducted by the Malaysian Joint Committee on Surgery.

MALAYSIAN CANDIDATES

  1. Malaysian citizens
  2. Have a Doctor of Medicine (MD) qualification or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
  3. Fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
  4. Serve for at least four (4) years after passing a basic medical degree.
  5. Have clinical experience of not less than one (1) year after obtaining full registration.
  6. Be 40 years old and below (only for international candidates) and submit relevant documents for university verification and review.
  7. Meet the entry requirements set by the University and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (for officers currently serving with the Ministry of Health).

 

INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATES

Currently, the program is not open to international candidates.

  1. Have a Medical Degree and Bachelor of Surgery or equivalent from a university that can be registered under the Medical Practitioners Act 1971 (Act No. 50) Malaysia. Have a Doctor of Medicine (MD) qualification or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
  2. Have clinical experience of not less than three years after registration of clinical experience; preferably in a surgical or related field certified by the relevant authority. Serve for at least four (4) years after passing a basic medical degree.
  3. Applicants are required to undergo a six-month probationary period in surgery postings at the Surgery unit, UPM before being accepted into this program. Meet the admission requirements set by the University and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (for officers currently serving with the Ministry of Health).
  4. Applicants must pass English according to the requirements of the UPM School of Graduate Studies.
