Master of Surgery (Orthopedics)

OVERVIEW

The program of Master of Surgery (Orthopedics) is offered to produce more experts in the field of Orthopedics to meet the high demand for public and private sectors of professionals’ human resources with the expertise in the field of Orthopedics thereby reducing the ratio of orthopedics specialists to the population.

The program can also increase the number of academics for the doctoral program in the field of orthopedics medicine in the public or private institutions. The program also provides career advancement opportunities to the surgical medical officers in Malaysia with the existence of more specific training opportunities.

The program aims to increase the number of orthopedics specialists who are able to conduct relevant research-related health problems in the field of Orthopedics in Malaysia.

 

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Phase I : Year 1

  • Phase I is for one (1) year. This phase includes Foundations of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Orthopedics.
 

Phase II : Year 2

  • Phase II is for one (1) year. This phase consists of General Orthopedics, Trauma, Elective Surgery and Research Project.
 

Phase III : Year 3 and Year 4

  • Phase III is for two (2) years. This phase includes the Advanced Orthopedics and Research Projects.

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

MALAYSIAN CANDIDATE

The entry requirements for this program are as follows:

  1. Aged under 40 years old at the time of entrance to program
  2. Possessed MD, MBBS, MBChB or equivalent qualification recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC)
  3. Fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC)
  4. Clinical experience of not less than two (2) years after the full registration and has at least 18 months of experience in the field of orthopedic surgery
  5. Acquired Band 4-6 in MedEx (Orthopaedic) Examination within the last three (3) years
  6. Selected as candidates for SPOT (Selection of Postgraduate Orthopaedic Trainees)
  7. Fulfill the university and Ministry of Health requirements (for candidates from University, private or Ministry of Health)  

 

INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATE

  1. Aged under 37 years during application (maximum age of 40 years old at the time of entrance to program)
  2. Possessed MD, MBBS, MBChB or equivalent qualification recognized by the Medical Council from origin country
  3. Fully registered with the Medical Council from the origin country
  4. Worked in government or private clinical practice setting for at least in the past twelve (12) months continuously before application 
  5. Clinical experience in surgical field of not less than 12 months including orthopedic work
  6. Fluent in English and have a minimum score of 600 for TOEFL and 6.5 for IELTS
  7. Obtained Band 4-6 in MedEx Examination (Orthopaedic) 
  8. Fulfill the university and Ministry of Health requirements including Malaysian Medical Council registration, Recommendation Letter from previous supervisor and Letter of Good Standing.
