OVERVIEW
The Masters of Pathology programme is a 4-year postgraduate programme with the primary objective of producing a competent service hospital pathologist. This programme is implemented in 2 phases : Phase I and Phase II, conducted as open system. Phase I runs for one (1) year which covers 4 major disciplines of pathology :
Anatomic Pathology,
Haematology,
Medical Microbiology and
Chemical Pathology. Candidates will undergo teaching and learning in all the modules, ten weeks for each module, at the Department of Pathology, FMHS, UPM. At the end of Phase I, candidates will sit for the Professional Exam I in General Pathology. The candidates must obtained a pass in all the papers before they can proceed to Phase II of the programme.
Phase II of the programme is of three (3) years duration in one of the disciplines of pathology chosen by the candidate. Candidates are posted at the accredited and gazzeted clinical diagnostic laboratory, Ministry of Health hospitals. Candidates are also expected to undertake a research project and submit a research project report. At the end of Phase II, candidates must sit and pass Professional Exam II in order to be awarded the Master of Pathology.
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
Phase I: Year 1
- Theoretical and Practical Basis in the field of Heamatology, Medical Microbiology, Chemical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Phase II: Year 2, 3 & 4
- Practical and Theoretical depth in a particular field chosen (Haematology, Medical Microbiology, Pathology, Anatomic Pathology or Chemistry).
- Practical tasks: Apprentice Clinical Pathology.
- Research Methodology, Biostatistics, Clinical Practical Methods and Good Medical Ethics.
- Conduct the research.
- Management and quality assurance laboratories.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
FOR MALAYSIAN APPLICANTS
- Hold a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, or a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MBBCh) degree or its equivalent recognized by the Senate.
- Fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and possess a valid Annual Practice Certificate (APC) during training.
- Have completed satisfactory house officer training and have at least one year of work experience as a Medical Officer.
- Pass the entrance examination (Medical Specialist Pre-entrance Examination) at the designated band and pass the entrance interview satisfactorily.
- Fulfill the admission requirements set by the university.
- Applications must be made through the Ministry of Health Malaysia (for officers currently serving with the MOH).
INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATE
- Hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or its equivalent from universities recognized under the Medical Act 1971 (Act No.50) Malaysia.
- Possess a Temporary Practicing Certificate (TPC) from the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
- Have a Certificate of Good Standing from the Medical Council of the country where the candidate previously served and/or from hospitals and/or university hospitals.
- Have clinical experience of not less than three years after registration as a medical practitioner, certified by the relevant authorities.
- Provide evidence of ability to pay the Master course fees and mandatory workshops (financial guarantee/bank statement). UPM reserves the right to terminate the course for candidates who are in arrears in course fees from year to year and to defer the certification of candidates as certified pathology specialists until the fees are settled.
- Pay medical indemnity fees (Pathology).
- Pass the English language proficiency test according to UPM Graduate School requirements.
- Pass the entrance examination (Medical Specialist Pre-entrance Examination-MedEx) at the designated band and pass the entrance interview satisfactorily.
- Fulfill the admission requirements set by the university.
