OVERVIEW
Master of Medicine (Psychiatry) is a postgraduate academic degree offered by Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. This program aims to produce competitive medical practitioners who have high ethical values and critical thinking skills to make informed decisions in the area of mental health.
The minimum and maximum periods of candidature are 4 and 7 years, respectively, on a full-time basis.English is the medium of instruction, but Bahasa Melayu is sometimes employed (where relevant).
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
Phase I: Year 1
- Theory: Basic Medical Sciences and Psychiatry.
Phase II: Year 2 & 3
- Theory and Training: General Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, including Research Methodology.
- Subspecialty Posting: Rehabilitation and Community Psychiatry, Forensic, Geriatric Psychiatry Child & Adolescent and Drug Addiction.
- Posting: Internal Medicine / Neurology.
Phase III: Year 4
- Posting: Psychiatric Consultation (Liaison) and provide a report of a dissertation that began from Year 2 and work as a Psychiatrist trainee (Consultant Psychiatrist in Training) in addition to studying the field of administrative psychiatry.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
MALAYSIAN CANDIDATE
Applicants must fulfill the following conditions:
- Malaysian citizen.
- MBBS, MBChB, MD or equivalent degree from a recognised university.
- Fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
- Possesses a valid Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) for local students; international students are required to submit equivalent documents for Senate consideration.
- Passes the entrance assessment as determined by the Psychiatry Specialty Committee for local students; for international students, the entrance assessment is determined by the Senate.
- At least 1 year clinical experience after full registration.
- Has been endorsed by the current organization.
- At least 3 years of service in the government of the country.
- Age must not exceed 40 years.
- Has never failed the course, withdrawn or declined the offer of Master of Medicine.
- Annual performance evaluation report for the last 3 consecutive years is at least 85%.
- Free from disciplinary action.
- Meet the eligibility requirements of the University and the Malaysian Ministry of Health.
- Specific requirement: Must have obtained MedEx Band 4 and/or passed MRCPsych Part 1.
INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATE
Entry requirements for international students:
- Possession of an M.B.B.S., M.B.Ch.B., M.D. or equivalent degree from a university recognised and approved by the Senate.
- Be fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).
- At least one (1) year clinical experience after full registration and approval by the Senate.
- Pass the entrance examination conducted by the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) and an interview with the Psychiatry Conjoint Board Committee.
